8M gallons of sewage may have spilled into creek, NCCo says

New Castle County drastically increased its estimate of a raw sewage spill that caused a fish kill in White Clay Creek today, saying that as much as 8 million gallons could have sluiced into the waterway during a 12-hour span on Saturday.

A report released by the Department of Special Services said that investigators now believe that a large regional pump station failed about 1 a.m., forcing more than 500,000 gallons to the surface from overflowing manholes every hour after about 5:30 a.m., when backup storage areas filled.
